Midwifery is a comprehensive, client-centered model of maternity care provided by registered health professionals known as Midwives. In British Columbia, Registered Midwives offer primary care throughout pregnancy, labour, birth, and up to six weeks postpartum. They are trained to provide physical, emotional, and social support, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and assist with both home and hospital births. Midwives emphasize informed choice, continuity of care, and respect for the physiological process of childbirth.

In B.C., midwifery services are fully funded by the provincial government through the Medical Services Plan (MSP). This means that all residents with a valid BC Services Card or Care Card can access midwifery care at no personal cost, without needing a referral from a doctor.
